These 5 Applications Could Make the World a Safer Place
On the street, at work, on a hike, or even during a natural disaster, we can benefit from smart applications and systems that keep us out of harm’s way.?
Recently, more than 150 Romanian students at?TeChallenge, a national competition for innovation in technology that is sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, came up with their own ideas on how to keep people safe. Here are five that stood out.
Visual danger software detection
One group conceived an idea for a “Smart Audio/Video Monitoring System” featuring strategically placed cameras that can identify a wide range of threats on city streets, including weapons, car accidents or fight detection. Once the danger has been detected, a live streaming alert informs authorities to speed up and improve public safety.
This one involves a smart backpack containing a device connected to the mobile phone that, once activated, will send the current location of an individual and alert emergency services if an accident happens. Additionally, a handle will trigger the opening of a special compartment and an airbag will pop-out in case of falls or similar accidents during mountain climbing. ?
An AI assistant dreamed up by several students would help people with visual impairments better experience the world around them. Connected to a mobile phone, it could help people read important documents, books, menus, etc. Third Eye could also easily recognize currency, thus making the payment process a lot easier.
The After Hours
If an earthquake strikes, this idea could save a few critical hours in finding victims and saving their lives. Using GPS, it sends the user’s last location to a server located far from the affected area and monitored by public emergency rescue teams. If not individually marked with “I’m safe,” the user’s phone automatically enters “battery saver mode” and transmits specific audio signals to emergency teams.
This idea features a wearable support system for rehabilitation and safety at work. S-Change would use a smart sock with pressure sensors to measure the way a person moves and if they experience any accidents while in motion. When danger is identified, an alert is sent to colleagues nearby for intervention.
TeChallenge aims to encourage students from Politehnica University of Bucharest and local high schools to develop their technical knowledge and creativity in areas such as energy efficiency, new power sources, renewable technologies, intelligent technologies, smart cities, mobility, and natural gas.
